Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura is the flagship cultural festival of Teruel, celebrating the legendary medieval love story of Isabel de Segura and Diego de Marcilla, known as the Lovers of Teruel. Over four days in February, the city transforms into a medieval village with theatrical performances, costumed processions, a grand medieval market, and music. The festival holds the title of Festival of International Tourist Interest.
Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura
Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura is a major historical reenactment in Teruel that brings the medieval legend of the Lovers of Teruel to life across four days each summer. The city transforms into an authentic medieval village with a market, theatrical performances, music, dances, and costumed processions retelling the doomed romance of Diego and Isabel. The event is organized by the Fundacion Bodas de Isabel, which has turned Teruel into a national reference for historical recreation.
Encomienda de Montegaudio
The Encomienda de Montegaudio is a medieval festival held annually in Alfambra, Teruel, in which the entire village steps back to the 12th century to revive the traditions of the Order of Montegaudio, a military order founded in this region. The event spans four days and includes knightly tournaments, medieval craft markets, costumed parades, and period reenactments, with Saturday being the most spectacular day of celebrations.
I+D Agro Conference
A one-day conference held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Teruel, bringing together farmers, livestock breeders, and agri-food experts to discuss the future of Teruel's agricultural sector. Topics include EU agricultural policy (PAC), the role of women in the agro sector, bioenergy opportunities, and the Teruel Protected Designation of Origin ham.
Semana Santa (Holy Week)
Alcorisa's Semana Santa is part of the celebrated Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, a collective drumming tradition declared of National Tourist Interest. The highlight is the Rompida de la Hora at midnight on Holy Thursday, when thousands of drums and bombos begin playing in unison, filling the night with a thunderous roar. The week also features a dramatic reenactment of the Crucifixion and solemn processions through the town.
Teruel Mágico
A three-day congress held in Teruel where science, history, occultism, and live performance converge under the banner of "Ocultura." Organised by the Diputacion de Teruel and Caja Rural, the free event (with prior registration) features lectures from mystery specialists, magic shows, live music, and radio recordings, serving as a preview of the 2026 total solar eclipse visible from the city.
San Fernando Interpeñas
The Semana Cultural de San Fernando is Teruel's week-long festival organised by Interpenas, the umbrella association of the city's social clubs (penas). Activities span late May into June and include a community hike, theatre performances, colloquia, and a grand final day at the bullring, serving as the traditional warm-up to the Fiestas del Angel and La Vaquilla.
La Vaquilla del Ángel
Teruel's most beloved annual festival, dedicated to the city's patron the Angel Custodio, spans four days of bull-running spectacles, the iconic "Puesta del Pañuelico" ceremony at the Plaza del Torico, corridas de toros, and dozens of open-to-all pena parties with live music and charangas throughout the city. Visitors are welcome to join the festivities free of charge at any of the penas.
Fiestas del Carmen
The two-day celebration in Rubielos de Mora in honor of the Virgen del Carmen includes a solemn novena, bell-ringing, a farol lantern procession at midnight on July 15, and a popular verbena (open-air dance) at the sports facilities on July 16.
The Departure of Diego
La Partida de Diego is a historical festival held in Teruel each autumn, telling the first chapter of the Lovers of Teruel legend: Diego's departure from the city to seek his fortune before returning to claim Isabel's hand. First celebrated in 2011 as a companion event to the February Bodas de Isabel, it features more than 150 costumed performers enacting scenes across the historic center in a highly accessible street-theatre format. The festival has grown steadily in popularity and is recognized as a quality cultural event that attracts visitors of all ages.
Fiestas del Pilar and San Miguel
The Fiestas del Pilar y San Miguel in Calanda honor the Virgen del Pilar and the town's co-patron Saint Michael, running for four to five days around October 12. Festivities are rooted in the celebrated Miracle of Calanda, in which the Virgin del Pilar is said to have restored the amputated leg of local devotee Miguel Pellicer in 1640, and include a floral offering, a procession of the Virgin and Miguel Pellicer, a jota festival, a parade of floats, and a prestigious bullfight. The celebrations are rounded out with open-air dances, fireworks, charanga tours, and tastings of Calanda's renowned peaches and olive oil.
Immaculate Conception (La Inmaculada Concepción)
The Immaculate Conception (La Inmaculada Concepcion) on December 8 is a national public holiday in Spain and one of the most important Catholic feast days in the liturgical calendar. Across the province of Teruel, parish churches hold special masses, and in many towns the day forms part of the "Puente de la Inmaculada" bridge holiday that combines with the Constitution Day on December 6, giving residents an extended festive break.
